Elk Grove in Sacramento County, California — The American West (Pacific Coastal)
Original Town Site of Elk Grove
This site was a significant part of the original Elk Grove town site. The town was located at the intersection of Upper Stockton Road (present-day Highway 99) and Elk Grove-Franklin Road (present-day Elk Grove Boulevard) from 1857 to circa 1878.
This site was home to Kirby Ranch, whose owner, Howard Kirby, was an early rancher in the Elk Grove community. The site was later developed by the Tribble Brothers, who contributed to the diversification of agriculture in the region.
In 1889, a ranch house was built on this site, which was situated approximately 1,200 feet west of the first building constructed in this area, Buckner's Hotel. The hotel was the center of Elk Grove's historic town site, before the town center was moved east adjacent to the Central Pacific Railroad circa 1878.
Capital Nursery acquired the property circa 1936, adding to its businesses located in Citrus Heights and Freeport, and providing plant materials to the region's residents.
