Astronaut, test pilot, combat pilot, and California legislator.

Senator Knight joined the United States Air Force in 1951. He holds the speed record for flight in the X-15 rocket plane achieving 6.7 mach (4,520 mph). After nearly ten years of test flying at Edwards AFB, he went to Southeast Asia in 1968 where he completed a total of 253 combat sorties in the F-100. After 32 years of service and more than 7,000 hours in the cockpits of more than 100 different aircraft, he retired from the USAF as a colonel in 1982. In honor of his achievements, Knight was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Aerospace Walk of Honor with the inaugural class in 1990. Knight also served as councilman and first elected mayor of Palmdale, California; in the California State Assembly; and as State Senator. Senator Knight supported the legislation that provided funding for Santa Clarita's Veterans Historical Plaza.
