English
The water, which, due to gravity, flowed downward from the Atlas Mountains to Marrakech through underground tunnels (khettaras), canals ('ayn, oued), large artificial dams (sahrij) and pipelines (qadous), entered into the riad at this point. The compact block of bricks and lime-mortar that you see, sealed and water-tight, is the junction for the two pipes that branch off toward the exotic garden [Point 1A] as well as to the Islamic garden [Point 1B]. The partially visible pipes, which convey the water, are formed with short terracotta pipes inserted into each other, and were laid by skilled workers such as the quadsis or the todghas khettarias.
