Salem in Dent County, Missouri — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Pratt, Mitchell & Company, CPA
The original building was a log house used as a hospital during the Civil War. Rooms were added later, including a livery stable on the south end of the block, which was run by George Pendergrass. T.B. Pence bought it from Mr. Pendergrass, Pence's father-in- law, and built a 3 story hotel around the log house (Pictured). Lodging at the hotel was 50 cents a night in the beginning. Later, the cost was $2.00 per day, $10.00 per week or $30.00 per month. Mrs. T. M. Thomure was the proprietress. The hotel was sold to a local bank, and later to Jim Butler. Next, Ken and Olive Preston purchased the property and tore down the hotel, and had a building erected to house the Lyric Movie Theater. In the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's, Riley Smith owned and operated the Western Auto store in this location.
