1. The Ranch House Marker
Inscription.
Mr. Hart used this Ranch House as a second home from the years 1921-1924. He came here to escape the hustle and bustle of Hollywood. During these years he planned his dream home at the top of the hill.

The Ranch House was built in 1910 by Mr. George Babcock Smith. He lived here. with his family until 1918, when William S. Hart leased the building and property to use as a film location. The house was constructed of board and bat (boards and nails). The walls were easily removed to allow film crews to film interior shots lit by sunlight.

In 1921, Mr. Hart purchased the property from Mr. Smith. As land became available, Mr. Hart increased the size of his property to 230 acres. He named this property the Horseshoe Ranch. In 1922, the Ranch House walls were permanently installed and the exterior of the building was stuccoed.
