1. Community Ties Marker

Inscription. A thriving and active community surrounded this farm. Local residents participated in events at schools and churches and joined civic organizations such as the Grange, Masons and Oddfellows. For entertainment, families gathered at pie suppers, singing schools and holiday pageants. Typical leisure activities included baseball games, visits with family and neighbors, and going for a drive. Many folks journeyed to the neighboring towns of Ashville and Circleville to see traveling theater and music exhibitions, lectures, and agricultural fairs. Anniversaries, weddings and funerals brought the community together for celebration and comfort. Hog butchering, grain threshing, and other work gave people a chance to visit.

No doubt a sense of accomplishment, along with a sharing of community news and a hearty dinner went along with this hard day's work of grain threshing.

The nearest town of Marcy had a building with a general store, post office and Grange hall on the upper floor. There was also a wool sales building, blacksmith shop and church. (Corner of St. Rt. 674 and Marcy Rd.) Fairfield County Atlas, 1875.

The nearest schoolhouse, located just west of this Farm, provided not only an education, but a place for the community to gather for after hours entertainment and special events. Schoolroom benches and chairs, as well as a handy shed roof, provide seating for many gathered for a photograph at the "last day picnic."

Notice the home baked goods, as well as the store bought treats of bananas and pickles at this gathering.
