Born in a home near Double Springs on the Sipsey River, Dr. Benjamin Wallace Roden was the son of William Norris and Letha (Bruce) Roden. He attended schools in Marion County and studied botanical medicine under his father and other doctors, beginning his own medical practice as a young man. He maintained a garden in which he grew many of the herbs that he used to fight chronic diseases. Esteemed Alabama historian Dr. A.B. Moore recorded this in 1927: "Dr. Benjamin Roden specializes in chronic diseases for which other methods have failed to cure. He has never lost a case of typhoid fever or appendicitis, despite the fact that he does not use a scapel." In the 1920's and 1930's. Dr. Roden continued to practice medicine in both Russellville and Haleyville, holding membership in Medical Societies in Marion and Winston Counties. In Haleyville, his clinic was located on the second floor of this building at 819 Twentieth Street. Dr. Roden was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge 464 in Haleyville.
