Première institution des sourds-muets au Canada
aux 39 et 41, rue D’Auteuil

Le 15 juin 1831 est fondée l'Institution des sourds-muets de Québec, une école publique, bilingue et gratuite, vouée à l'intégration sociale et professionnelle des sourds-muets. Ronald Macdonald (1797-1854) en assume la direction et agit comme précepteur. Deux ans plus tard, Antoine Caron (1813-1847), sourd-muet, seconde M. Macdonald à titre de répétiteur. En 1836, par manque de fonds, l'Institution doit fermer ses portes. Elle compte alors une vingtaine d'élèves âgés de 6 à 25 ans.

First institution for deaf and mutes in Canada
On June 15, 1831, the Institution for the Deaf and Mute of Quebec, a public, bilingual and free school, dedicated to the social and professional integration of deaf-mutes. Ronald Macdonald (1797-1854) assumed leadership and acted as tutor. Two years later, Antoine Caron (1813-1847), deaf-mute, assisted Mr. Macdonald as tutor. In 1836, due to lack of funds, the Institution had to close its doors. It then had around twenty students aged from 6 to 25 years old.
