1. Chief Logan American Elm Marker
In 1774, after his family was needlessly killed, Chief Logan of the Mingo Tribe delivered his famous speech beneath an imposing American elm in what is now Pickaway County, Ohio. His words, "Who is there to mourn for Logan? No one.", remain with us today. This elm was one of the largest ever known with a height of 65 feet and a crown spread of 180 feet.
Elms were once used by Native Americans to make canoes, rope, utensils, and roofing for their homes. As with the Chief Logan elm, which succumbed to blight and storm damage in 1964, American elms are being ravaged by Dutch elm disease. Elm species are now being developed to genetically withstand this terrible malady.
