1. Patrick Henry National Champion Osage Orange Marker, Side One

Inscription. The Patrick Henry Osage Orange tree is located at Red Hill, the Virginia grave site of the famous delegate to the Second Continental Congress. It was Patrick Henry's stirring, "Give me liberty or give me death!" speech which prompted Congress to pass his motion favoring a war for independence from British tyranny.

Osage orange, named for the Native American tribe which used its wood for bows, produces a large, green, inedible fruit, often called "hedge apples." Native to Texas, these trees were introduced into Ohio in the 1800's when they were planted in hedge rows to form natural barriers or fences to contain livestock.
