1. Robert E. Lee Sweetgum Marker, Side One

Inscription. The Robert E. Lee Sweetgum grows at Stratford Hall, the Virginia plantation where the famous Confederate general was born. In 1865, during the Civil War, Lee became Supreme Commander of all the Confederate armies. Long respected and honored by Southerners, Lee has also been considered a hero by all Americans.

Pioneers used the gum, or resin, obtained from the inner bark of this tree for medicinal purposes and chewing gum. Ohio is located at the northern edge of the sweetgum's range, which extends as far south as Central America.
