1. Denbigh Plantation Marker

Inscription. This foundation is the site of ‘Mathews Manor' (c. 1626) home of Samuel Mathews, Sr. (c. 1590 - 1659?). Col. Mathews served as a member of Va. Council of State, Va.'s agent to England during the Protectorate, and helped to settle the boundary dispute between Md. and Va. in 1657. A 1643 pamphlet described that Mathews "keeps a good house, lives bravely, and is a true lover of Va.: he is worthy of much honor.” His son and namesake was governor of Va. from 1656 until his death in 1659/60.
