1. Jefferson Highway in Carthage Marker
Inscription. Established in 1915, this auto trail traveled over 2,400 miles from Winnipeg, Canada to New Orleans, Louisiana. It was one of the first north-south auto routes in America, with Carthaginian James D. Clarkson its General Manager from 1916 to 1922. Traveling Main to 4th to Oak Street Road, the Jefferson Highway continues to Carterville, Webb City and Joplin. This east-west portion would become U.S. 66 in 1926.
