1. Red Oak II General Store Marker
The Red Oak II General Store was built at the turn of the century in Red Oak, MO. It was operated by Mr. Lowell's relatives since 1921. During the war years Mr. Lowell's father took over running the store. This is where Mr. Lowell learned to sculpt and paint while listening to and watching the ol' timers sit around the potbellied stove, spinning yarns and whittling. The store was moved to Red Oak II and restored to its original splendor in 1988. The attachment on the north side of the General Store was originally an icehouse. It was one of the few remaining icehouses in the country. A lot of ol' timers will recall that this sawdust insulated structure was an absolute necessity in the days before modern freezers and ice makers. When Mr. Lowell was growing up in Red Oak, many a wintry day was spent helping the menfolk save ice from White Oak Creek which would be stored in the icehouse in preparation for the warmer days to come.
