91st Evacuation Hospital
| — | 75 jaar Bevrijding fotoroute | — |
On September 7, 1942, a special SS school for boys was opened in the former Jesuit training institute. This was where the new leaders of the Third Reich were to be formed. The avenue to the school was baptized "Adolf Hitler Allee". Those who successfully completed school were expected to immediately enlist in the Waffen-SS. The students were evacuated in early September 1944.
On September 28, 1944, the American 91st Evacuation Hospital moved into the former SS Reichsschule. Until March 1945, approximately 12,000 wounded from the Ardennes Offensive (Battle of the Bulge) and the Battle of the Hürttgen Forest were treated here. After the departure of the Americans, the building first became a repatriation camp and from June 1945 an internment camp for "wrong Dutch" who had to work in the coal mines.
