Inscription.
Funerary Heritage
In the Middle Ages, the village lords, priests and donors (those who had made large donations to the Parish) were traditionally buried INSIDE the church. Magnificent gravestones, together with simple stone crosses, covered the bodies.
After several centuries, the church floor was covered with rather poorly-arranged gravestones. On June 26th, 1784, Emperor Joseph Il published an edict, which, "for health reasons", obliged parishioners to evacuate both bodies and gravestones from the church. Graveyards around churches were also prohibited.
Clermont refused to obey these orders, but the parish finally decided to replace the entire church floor in 1830. Many gravestones and crosses were placed against the church wall, as were certain crosses from the graveyard. Today, only the gravestones of Thyri de Couves, Priest Henrar and the crosses of the Alderman Schouwerjans and Sire Heinrich Schavant can be seen inside the church.
Some of these crosses are carved on both sides. Over time, they were therefore retrieved and used for new graves.
