The Lake View Cemetery is situated on the east side of Route 22 approximately 3 miles south of the village of Willsboro. It was the Hoffnagle family cemetery, but in 1878, Franklin Hoffnagle conveyed lands adjoining this plot to a group of citizens, who formed the Lake View Cemetery Association which was incorporated on September 14, 1878, as a rural cemetery. The oldest grave in the cemetery is that of Melchior Hoffnagle who died March 30, 1791. He was the first supervisor

of the town of Willsboro, having been elected on March 17, 1788. This cemetery also contains the graves of William Gilliland who gave Willsboro its name and that of John Hoffnagle who fought in the Revolution as a Loyalist under General Clinton.

Son of William Gilliland (abt 1700 Armagh, Ireland-abt 1738, Armagh, Ireland) and Jane Stoker 1706, Cornoneaugh, Armagh, Northern Ireland - 30 Sep 1796, Willsboro, New York)

3. William Gilliland (by Stefan Bielinski). Excerpt:

According to traditional sources, William Gilliland was born in 1734 in Caddy, Northern Ireland. He enlisted in the 35th Regiment of the British army. About 1756, he shipped out for America. In that year, he reportedly saw action at Lake George. As a veteran, in 1764, he was able to obtain a number of soldier's land bounty shares to ultimately secure title to 2,000 acres on Lake Champlain.

3. William Gilliland Gravesite (H-5)
Located on west side of Lakeview Cemetery.
In 1766, he brought his family north and, with a number of recruited tenant/settlers, established the town he named Willsboro on the western shore of Lake Champlain.
