Inscription. Using a hand-powered well pump was easier and faster than hauling water from the well by hand. After indoor plumbing was installed in the keepers' quarters in 1939, a generator-powered pump probably replaced the hand pump. The purpose of the pump house is to protect the well pump from wear and tear caused by the salt air and direct sunlight.
