On the origins (in translation): 16 people were present when the Christiania Seamen's Association was formally founded on 15 December 1846. Bernt Hall was elected as chairman, while the "host" Repslager Wilhelm Tamm became the association's first secretary.(Submitted on July 30, 2024.)
The word "Sømand" had a much narrower conceptual content in the founders' time than today. This was a professional assembly, not a trade union, which was not at all open to everyone. Membership was limited to shipmasters and helmsmen, who, after being registered in writing, in a meeting of one and of the members, the nextmeeting is voted on, and then the plurality of the members present have their votes. Others, who took an interest in the Association, could be admitted, but then only with a two-thirds majority.
In contrast to the last 125 years, knowledge of the association's activities in the first fifty years is very limited. The minutes of the meetings from 1846 to 1896 have been lost, apparently during the preparation of a planned but never published history for the fiftieth anniversary in 1896. Of the matters that were discussed in these years, mention can be made of the fire and signal service, the maritime service, the harbor police, cases of rescue, lantern carrying, rudder command, etc. The association was also concerned with social issues, not least the desire for a pension scheme for seafarers.
