1. Court House and College Marker

Inscription. By the 19th century, conditions had become so wretched in the city's old Stonebow prison that a new Sessions House, incorporating a prison, was constructed below Lindum Road. It was built to a design by William Hayward, who was also responsible for the Judges' Lodgings in Castle Hill.

The gaoler installed a treadmill because he thought it would be beneficial to the prisoners' health. The building now forms part of Lincoln College, in which a court room and cell have been preserved and are open for public viewing.

The College itself has a history dating back to Victorian times, very much an 'improving' era. In the 1880s, the Lincoln School of Art moved here; it became the School of Science and Art, then the Municipal Technical School, and finally, and most simply, the City School.

This institution moved to new premises in Skellingthorpe Road in the 1960s, and the site became available for further education as the Lincoln Technical School, now Lincoln College. With around 18,000 students, it is one of the biggest providers of further education in the region.

The sinking lion
A large park called the Arboretum opened on Monks Road, not far from here, in 1872. One of the sculptures in it was an enormous lion. This lion had to be brought from the railway station to the park on a specially constructed trolley. The whole thing was so heavy that it sank into the ground in the park!
