1. Commemoration of Port Stanley Harbour Marker
Inscription. This tablet erected in 1939 commemorates more than one hundred years of development of Port Stanley harbour beginning with the launching of schooner “Sterling” in 1827 of 90 tons burthen and commencement of first harbour pier. The steamer “Thames" operated between Port Stanley and Buffalo from 1832. A swing bridge was built in 1843. About 1869 the schooner "Mary Roe" sailed from here to Germany and world ports. With the advent of the railway in 1856 Port Stanley became the port and summer resort of St. Thomas and London.
