Inscription. In 1899, the Bank of Tupelo acquired the property at this location to construct its new bank building. The property had once been deeded by the U.S. Government to a Chickasaw Indian named Pis-Tah-La-Tubby. The building served as headquarters for the Bank of Tupelo, renamed Bank of Mississippi in 1966, until the bank's new headquarters building One Mississippi Plaza was completed in 1978 and located one block south. Bank of Mississippi was renamed Bancorp South in 1998 as it grew to a multistate financial services company providing banking, mortgage, insurance and investment services.
