Excerpt (in translation): Grønland Squareis located in Grønland in the district of Gamle Oslo. The square was laid out in the 1860s as a cattle square, i.e. a place for buying and selling cattle. In addition, this was one of several places in the city where there was a municipal clock, and from 1911 there was also a gardener's hall and a meat inspection station here. The name in the vernacular soon became “Kutørjet”. At that time, the square was located between Akerselva, gata Grønland, Schweigaards gate and Tøyenbekken. The western parts of the square were covered by Nylandsveien (Oslo) around 1970. Today, the square is a little further east.(Submitted on August 7, 2024.)
It all started in 1864 when sixty farm owners in Greenland recommended to the city that they buy the plot Grønland 3 as a square. The purpose was to bring order to the lively trading activity that took place around the Vaterlandsbrua. The following year, the square was leveled and gravelled, later paved. It was initially to be used for trade in "live cattle and grain imported overland".
