1. Welcome to Sentinel Trail Marker
The community of Sentinel Trail is a northern mesic forest. Mesic means moist. Two hundred years ago, this kind of forest covered over 1/3 of Wisconsin.
Hike all or part of two-mile Sentinel Trail to discover the distinct look its trees create:
beech and maple trees dominate
a shady forest floor
sunny patches from wind-thrown trees

Twenty trail signs will guide you. Plan on 60-90 minutes to hike all of Sentinel Trail. The trail is gently rolling. The first 1/4-mile is accessible to strollers and wheelchairs. Bikes are not allowed.

4. Sentinel Trail
These Sentinel Trail markers are affixed to trees all along the 2-mile trail. They feature an artistic rendering of the second Eagle Tower, which was built in 1932, replacing the 1914 original. It was torn down in 2016, with a new Eagle Tower opening overlooking Green Bay in 2021.

Excerpt from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources: "Peninsula Park Beech Forest features a continuum of forest types from the dry edge of the Niagara dolomite escarpment to rolling uplands forested with mesic species. The northern mesic forest is old second-growth, with sugar maple, American beech, hemlock, yellow birch, white birch, and ironwood; some trees are nearly 2 feet in diameter. Understory species include yellow blue-bead-lily, large-flowered trillium, red baneberry, Hooker's orchid, and bracted orchid.
