1. Forest Nursery Marker

Inscription. A tree fell years ago, creating the hummock in front of you. Over time, the huge trunk rotted and turned into rich soil. Today the cradle mound is a good place to start life. How many tree seedlings are growing on this forest nursery?

As you approach the trail intersection, 300-hundred feet to your left, examine the forest floor. Compare both sides of the trail. Few fallen trees cover the left, or south, side. Trees are small around and are all about the same size. Prior to 1950, something disturbed this forest (land clearing, logging, fire or windstorm). Since then, it has slowly recovered.
