1. Second Presbyterian Church Marker
Inscription. Second Presbyterian Church was established in 1871 when Kingston Presbytery, United Presbyterian Church (UPC), granted fourteen persons a charter. During the 1878 Yellow Fever epidemic, men of the congregation bravely worked to maintain essential services in Chattanooga. Members Dr. R. N. Barr and teacher Hattie Ackerman remained in the city and lost their lives as they cared for the sick. Designed by renowned architect R. H. Hunt, this Gothic Revival edifice was dedicated in 1891. It has a large sanctuary with no supporting columns illuminated by multiple stained-glass windows. Ministries have included a weekly Bible School to educate the mothers and children of the West Side; noon services for the business community; and St. Matthew's Shelter for men. On February 29, 1980 the church was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
