The Soviet Military Counter Intelligence in Germany operated from this building. The secret service was an important instrument in securing their rule as an occupying force and establishing a dictatorship in East Germany. It was intended to counter Western intelligence services who were spying on the Soviet army. The heads of the secret service had their office in the former Empress’s Room above the entrance. Notices were posted in the showcases opposite.
