1. Padres' Living Quarters Marker
Inscription. The earliest adobe buildings at Mission San Diego were built in the fall of 1774. It is believed that this room originally would have been two rooms that were part of the original convento wing of the quadrangle and was built in the late 1700's.

The vignette has been furnished to illustrate the simple lifestyle of the padres. Ideally, two priests were assigned to a mission; one priest would have been in charge of administration of the mission and the other priest would have been responsible for the education of the local Indian people. In reality, for many years, only one priest was assigned to Mission San Diego.

In 1850-57, when the U.S. Military used the mission as a presence after the U.S. Mexican War, this room was used as living quarters for the family of the senior military officer.

Today, it has become an interpretive center for students of mission history.
