1. Northrup F-89 Scorpion Marker

Inscription.

The Northrop F-89 Scorpion was the first aircraft designed as an all-weather interceptor. First flown in 1948, it served as the mainstay of the fighter interceptor force during the 1950s.

The F-89J on display is painted with the markings of the 54th Fighter Interceptor Squadron and was assigned to Ellsworth AFB, SD, from 1952 to 1960. In 1957, while flying the F-89, the 54th won the Hughes Trophy for best overall interceptor squadron in the Air Force. The squadron later moved to Elmendorf and was assigned F-15C aircraft.
