Recreation has always been an important part of life in Mackinaw City. From hunting and fishing, to ice boating, or just enjoying the amazing blue ice that sometimes piles up on short, winter can be a time of delight.

A ferry carried people, autos, and railroad cars back and forth between Mackinaw City and St. Ignace winter or summer. But the ice could interrupt the journey, locking the ferry in place. If they desired, the passengers could get out and walk the remainder of the way.
