1. Welcome to the Cabbage Patch Marker
In this garden you'll find the OS Cross cabbage, an F1 hybrid variety that is referred to as the "giant cabbage".
The variety was bred to grow much larger and heavier than standard cabbages as illustrated by the sculpture.
Farmers dedicated to growing giants for competition use closely held methods and techniques to achieve award-winning sizes but the average gardener can achieve a 30-40# cabbage with little effort.
Although the giants at the State Fair have sat out for many days after harvest and are no longer ideal for human consumption they, along with other giant vegetables, are donated to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in Portage for a fall feast for the residents. There are many photos of grizzlies enjoying the veggies especially giant pumpkins!
