Ward Two in Somerville in Middlesex County, Massachusetts — The American Northeast (New England)
Spinning Wheels
Some spectacular October morning, as the Tour de Somerville bicycle race flashes past the corner of Central Street and Somerville Avenue in a swirl of spokes and spandex, consider this: just over a century ago, Somerville boasted exactly one bike. Its owner? The same Willie Nickerson who helped create the first disposable razor. As sources of fun, exercise, and practical transportation, bicycles have glided gracefully through the city's history ever since - and their popularity here helped Somerville Avenue qualify for federal funds as an official "intermodal transportation corridor."
