Sutton-Alpine in Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska — Northwest (North America)
Wall Tent
Wall tents have been a part of Alaskan camps and settlements since the late 1800's. From the gold rush camps of the 1890's to fishing and hunting camps of today, these substantial tents with built-up walls remain typical of camp living in the Alaska bush (any region of the state off the road or ferry systems). Anchorage began as nothing more than a collection of wall tents similar to this one, when the Alaska Engineering Commission set up camp on Ship Creek in 1915 while building the Alaska Railroad. The agricultural colonists sent to the Matanuska Valley during the Great Depression of the 1930's, lived in wall tents after they arrived in Palmer. Wall tents were also used in gold and coal mining camps and for the construction crews building the Glenn Highway. The tents are customarily equipped with a stove for cooking and heating, and are habitable even in Alaska's winter temperatures.
