A Handful, A Pinch and a Dash of Perfection. 1911. Minnie Simpson Turner perfects the recipe for lemon pie filling. In a time when cooking skills passed from mother to daughter and recipes called for a "handful of flour" and "pinch of salt," Fannie Farmer revolutionized cooking with concepts like standard-sized measuring cups, printed cookbooks, and the systematic study of nutrition. One of her star students: lifelong Somerville resident Minnie Turner, later a faculty member at Farmer's Boston School of Cookery and at Somerville High.

Peanut Butter Gets a New Friend. Seeking the source of the Fluff-er-nutter? Point a sticky finger to the Springfield Street home of Joseph Archibald Queri. He invented Marshmallow Fluff before World War I and sold it door-to-door until a wartime shortage of sugar forced him to close. He later sold the formula to two men from Swampscott for $500. Mothers remain divided: is the Fluff-er-nutter really a sandwich or a dessert?
