Inscription.
"When my family and I immigrated to the United States in 1968—directly to Somerville—I was astounded by the number of opportunities that were available for people, and inspired by an active and vibrant community that warmly welcomed my family and me. I want to do my part to ensure that others have the same opportunities that were available to us. What an honor it is to serve the people of this great city as their Mayor!" - Mayor Dorothy A. Kelly Gay, 2002

You can see it in the endless variety of faces on the street and names on the mailboxes, even the dazzling range of vegetables in the grocery stores: Somerville is a great American immigrant success story. For centuries, waves of immigrants from Europe, South America, Asia, Africa, and the West Indies have made Somerville their first home in America. Together, they have built an incredibly vibrant, diverse and truly American city.
