Inscription.
Born in North Carolina. Graduated in 1833 from West Point. In 1845 came to Texas with army of General Zachary Taylor, to fight in Mexican War. In 1850's retired from army to be a planter. Also served as Commissioner of Public Works, State of Louisiana.

Appointed a brigadier general of the Confederacy, 1861. Made great captures of guns and prisoners at Battle of Shiloh, 1862. Victor at Chickamauga, 1863. Strong disciplinarian. Devoted patriot. Had stern sense of duty. Became military advisor, 1863-1865, to President Jefferson Davis. After surrender of General Lee, traveled with President Davis toward Florida and a suggested escape route. Was captured by Federals and paroled in Georgia in May 1865.

Alabama Commissioner of Public Works, 1866-1870. Then served in Texas as chief engineer of Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe Railway. Later, state inspector of railroads built under Texas land grants. Lived several years in Galveston where he died.

Old town at this site on G.C. & S.F. (1901-1934) was named in General Bragg's honor. It is one of many towns and counties in Texas named for military leaders, statesmen, public officials and soldiers.
