1. Grand Army of the Republic Marker
Inscription.

The Civil War, fought on American soil and dividing states, communities, and families, changed the nation forever. Founded in 1866 on the principles of "Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty," the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) helped Union veterans to stay in contact and to support federal pensions for veterans. The G.A.R. reached its peak enrollment in 1890, with 490,000 members. One of its most important legacies is the founding of Decoration Day on May 30—a day to remember veterans by decorating their graves. This annual observance is now known as Memorial Day.

[Caption:] On Decoration Day, the G.A.R. erected memorial arches at Ft. Snelling and other locations where they held encampments.
