1. Mouthwash Factory Marker
For more than 35 years, this building was used to process, package and distribute Lavoris Mouthwash. Invented in 1902 by a Minneapolis druggist, Charles E. Leigh, it was first marketed as a "healing antiseptic and deodorant" for the mouth.
The Lavoris Chemical Company had no salespeople and just this one facility, but attracted customers through advertising which touted the "purging action" of its mouthwash on odors. It was sold entirely by mail order "in all 48 states" as a 1958 article reported.
Lavoris was sold to the Vicks Company in 1958 and production here continued for only a few more years.
