1. Alaskan Ingenuity Marker
This wood stove is an excellent example of Alaskan ingenuity. The collared opening and door are brake drums from an old automobile. Although it does not come from the same time period as the roadhouse, it does demonstrate the inventive re use common during that early period.
Alaska was a perfect place for the saying: "Necessity is the mother of invention." One had to be careful about what was thrown away. Most saved everything they could, because materials were scarce in the north as late as the 1960's. The early pioneers were famous for their ability to effectively use seemingly worthless scrap.
