1. Non-Commissioned Officers Row Marker

Inscription. This was the view looking west of Center Street before April 1925, when a fire destroyed these homes, the power plant, and the water pumping station. The fire was the deliberate result of an effort to capture the contraband of illegal immigrants and alcohol.

Unfortunately, the fire was left unattended as the Federal Agents took their captives and goods and left the Island. Fire Departments from St. Petersburg, Manatee County and Hillsborough County responded to the fire the following day

It can be reached from Anderson Boulevard (Florida Route 679) 1½ miles west of Pinellas Bayway South, on the left when traveling west. The marker is located on Egmont Key National Wildlife Refuge and State Park and can only be reached by boat or ferry. The ferry departs from the bay pier within Fort De Soto Park. Touch for map.
