Fort Snelling in Hennepin County, Minnesota — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
The Hospital
Reconstructed (Original 1822-1904)
This is the Army's first hospital at the post.
Doctors treated the local community here. The post surgeon also kept daily weather records-some of the first in the region.
After 1839, other buildings served as hospitals. A new hospital was built on the upper post in 1894 and was used for more than 60 years.
In 1918, the post was designated General Hospital No. 29. It was a 1,500-bed facility specializing in prosthetic limbs and the rehabilitation of soldiers returning from World War I service.
