1. Dog Sled Episode Marker
Inscription. Another incident in Baraga’s life recalls the time when an Indian came to him at night requesting the Blackrobe to accompany him to his lodge to attend spiritually to his dying mother. After providing the Indian and his dog with food, warmth, and rest, Baraga made plans to leave early the following morning. He obtained another dog from one of the villagers to help pull the sled which was loaded with necessary provisions. This latter dog turned obstinate before too long and refused to go onward. They had no other choice but to release the animal.

Each one, then, in turn, took the line and helped the original dog pull the sled. They reached the Indian’s village at the end of three days journey. Father Baraga administered the sacraments to the aged and woman, and shortly after, she died. No time or distance kept Baraga from fulfilling his role in the service of God.
