1. A Happy Journey Marker
Inscription.
Although so many of Baraga’s missionary journeys were filled with hardships, occasionally he could relax and smile during a pleasant trip to one mission or another. Journeys taken in late summer found him filled with joy and gratitude as he beheld the beautiful surroundings. He welcomed with grateful heart the swiftness and ease of travel in a sturdy Indian canoe as it glided on shiny river paths through primeval forests. How he must have anticipated with great joy the next stop on this trip to serve his children in yet another village.

From the very beginning when he received the letter of his acceptance to the mission field of North America on the seventh anniversary of his first Holy Mass, he said, “Now at length, I hear from afar the voice which invites me to come to the holy mission. As soon as possible I will go to that so much neglected part of the Lord’s vineyard.”
