Before European settlers arrived, more than 12 million acres of tallgrass prairie stretched through the region. The gently rolling terrain was blanketed with a thick sod of grasses and wildflowers that often grew taller than a man. Within the Blackland Prairie region are north-south bands of Cross Timbers habitat. A thick, scrubby woodland of cedar elm, post oak, hack berry, and hickory grows in the thin, sandy soils of the Cross Timbers. Eisenhower and Lake Mineral Wells state parks contain particularly good examples of this ecosystem.
