Missourians, Never Run
| | Wilson's Creek National Battlefield | |
Covering this low valley on Bloody Hill, the taking of these guns was key for a Southern victory. Three times the Missouri State Guard advance into the iron shot and canister fired into their ranks. Three times they were driven back, bloody and torn.
In the last assault, exhausted men of the State Guard made it to the muzzles of the cannonsonly to be kicked back through hand-to hand combat with Totten's gunners. Afterwards a Southern officer wrote: "We watched the retreating enemy through our field glasses and were glad to see him go."
...the blast of a cannon at such range (within 200 yards) will blow an infantry line out of existence, and no human courage can be any avail against such machinery. Thomas Bacon private, Missouri State Guard
