Inscription.
The Stone Tree House. . From its perch on the Painted Desert rim, this building has seen many changes. First built by Herbert Lore in the early 1920s, it was made with the resource most abundant in the area: petrified wood! Look above the double doors and you will see a remnant of that time. These doors were then the main entrance to Lore's "Stone Tree House." Guests toured the Painted Desert by car, then came to the inn for rest and refreshment. After the National Park Service purchased the building in 1936, it underwent a major reconstruction. The remodel was carried out by workers of the Civilian Conservation Corps. The building was redesigned in a Pueblo Revival style and the entrance moved to face the newly completed rim road to the south. There are no rooms to rent today, but the inn is still a friendly landmark to travelers of the Painted Desert, like you.
