What does silence sound like? Where do you go if there are no footsteps to follow? How does it feel to be in a place where day and night are the only times that matter? How does it feel to be totally immersed in nature?

The answers to questions like these await you in the badlands below.

The Petrified Forest National Wilderness Area is valued for its undeveloped and natural qualities. These lands allow for unconfined recreation and opportunities for solitude. This wilderness area was one of the first to be officially designated, and this portion in the Painted Desert before you preserves 43,020 acres. These lands are yours to get lost in, find yourself in, or simply take in the view. Welcome to the Wilderness!
