Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation
Capstans were originally developed for sailing ships in which winds, or heavy ropes, were used to weigh anchor or raise sails. Capstans were also used in locks and dams, as well as in railroad yards to move or spot (position) engines, and railroad cars. The capstan located here was used by the Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation at their Pittsburgh Works.
