Inscription.
Former Black Civil War veteran, Andrew Jackson, worked for the Phelps family and helped to preserve and maintain this stately property until it was sold in 1888. He came to Binghamton from Georgia after the war during which he was a "body servant" to Major Edward B. Stephens of the 137th NY Company.

He was one of the almost 200,000 Black veterans who played a heroic part in the Civil War effort.
