1. Keepers' Garden Marker
Inscription.
In addition to fishing and hunting, keepers kept gardens to supplement non-perishable staples such as flour, rice and beans that the U.S. Lighthouse Service provided. Family members that lived here in the 1930s and 40s have shared stories of keeping a small garden at this location. Museum volunteers planted this garden with foods commonly grown in home gardens in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. Museum volunteers also maintain a keepers' herb garden, located near the north kitchen of the Keepers' House.

This photograph (right) was taken in 1923 from the top of the St. Augustine Lighthouse, facing northeast. The keepers' garden with a small water tower (in the yellow square) and a radio tower are in the foreground.

Also note the ruins of the first St. Augustine Lighthouse just offshore on the right side of the photo. The white house near the shore to the left (or north) is the U.S. Navy radio station. See if you can find these features from the top of the lighthouse today!
